Hike into virgin Polynesian backcountry, accessible by permit only, and explore the wild coast & interior of Kaua'i. Then, build a sustainable volunteer project in cooperation with our Maui-based non-profit partner, Kipahulu 'Ohana .

expedition route & itinerary

Adventure philanthropy on Kaua'i begins, of course, on the beach, where the island's most challenging hiking route, the Kalalau Trail, launches into a Land of the Lost. For 11 miles, the trail hugs the emerald-green cliffs plunging into the Pacific, crosses streams and brooks, and emerges onto vast, unpopulated beaches.

your volunteer project

This three-day volunteer project is in partnership with Kipahulu 'Ohana, based on Maui. After trekking Hawaii's most beautiful trail on Kauai, we'll work with a local indigenous population in Maui to install a critically needed micro-hydro generator. The renewable energy generator will supply much needed irrigation to a community taro farm, which will help it provide more sustainable income to the community while protecting traditional farming methods and crops.

what's included in this expedition?

The price of this expedition includes all lodging, airport pickups, ground transportation, the flight to Maui, all but one or two meals, and the development and coordination of a 2-day, hands-on volunteer project that you will complete with other expedition members. Roadmonkey will also provide group cooking gear, group first-aid kit, water filters, and campsite and backcountry permit fees. The cost does not include airfare to Hawaii and a meal or two while you're on free time.

lodging & food

Upon arrival on Kaua'i, we provide a soft landing in a private room at comfortable local hotel.  During our 3 days on the trail and during the volunteer project you'll be sharing a comfortable, sizeable tent with another expedition member.

Meals while backpacking and camping will be basic, nutritious and as delicious as we can make it. While in town, we'll eat either at the hotel, local restaurants, or enjoying the mouth-watering bounty of roadside stands.

arrival & departure

You should plan to arrive at Lihue (LIH), on a Saturday, one day before the Sunday launch of this expedition. You'll be picked up by a Roadmonkey rep at LIH. The expedition concludes the following Sunday, 8 days later.
