swim, snorkel & learn to sail, and build an island radio station

Challenge MeterDates: Mar. 3 - 11
Price: $5699 per couple / $2998.41 per person

You'll swim, snorkel, kayak and learn to sail, hands-on, aboard a spacious catamaran (double hull) for 4 days, along a calm sea route that weaves through Puerto Rico's eastern island chain. Then, for 3 days, you'll build a grassroots, multi-lingual and multi-cultural community radio station on Vieques, an island of white-sand beaches that was former a bombing range for the U.S. military.

expedition route & itinerary

We pick you up at the airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. After a night strolling through the old town, we  wake early and drive to Fajardo, an hour eastward, to board our catamaran. From there, it's a 4-day sailing adventure on the calm Caribbean Sea. Each evening we'll dock off an island and, if you're up to it, jump into kayaks and explore the coastline.

Your days will consist of hands-on sailing instruction from our certified boat captain, kayaking, fishing for our evening meals, swimming and snorkeling, reading and downtime...repeat.

Each night, the catamaran will dock on a different Puerto Rican island: Icacos, Culebra & Culebrita.

your volunteer project

Following our island-hopping sailing adventure aboard a double-hulled catamaran, you and your expedition mates will help a local community build a grassroots, multi-cultural radio station on Vieques. The station is intended to foster education, communication and development of Vieques by local Puerto Ricans after years of control by the U.S. armed forces.

Our non-profit partner for this project is the small but well-respected Comité pro Rescate y Desarrollo de Vieges, (Vieques Rescue & Development Committee), aka the CPRDV.

lodging & food

Puerto Rico and its constellation of islands are fully Caribbean. We'll be eating classic island fare, which means plenty of fresh seafood. Vegetarians and other dietary restrictions are easily accommodated. On the boat, the kitchen, by necessity, is modest. All meals are home cooked and nutritrous and served family style. Water and beer are provided.

Upon arrival in San Juan, you'll stay in superior lodging for two singles or couples. The catamaran includes 4 (small) bedrooms, each with a queen bed. Twin beds are not possible. On Vieques, superior hotel rooms on or near the beachfront are shared (two to a room, with separate beds).

Adventurers Who Travel Different, Talk About It:

What you are doing has had a huge affect on all of us, internally. Externally, there is a playground where there was none and a bit more hope than there was just a week ago. There are ties forged by the experience that go both ways, and cross oceans, that will never be undone. It's a beautiful thing.
~ John, architect (Vietnam 2010)

Thank you for an incredible trip. I was surprised to return from travel to a new land feeling rejuvenated by and indebted to a group of people I traveled with. We Roadmonkeys dug our toes into foreign soil and I got the feeling that, in a little over a week, we were let in on some of the secrets Peru keeps from travelers of convenience.
~ McKenna, hedge fund administrator (Peru 2010)

I was hoping for a trip through which I would learn about and participate in another culture and be challenged mentally, emotionally and physically in a relatively safe format. The Roadmonkey trip fulfilled and, then, wildly exceeded all my expectations.
~ Chelsea, biochemist (Vietnam 2009)
